Description

This wine is deep ruby red in colour with violet hints. On the nose, there are intense aromas of ripe red and black berries, prunes and crème de cassis. On the palate, there are hints of vanilla and caramel from the French oak. This medium-bodied wine is smooth with a long finish.

The Malbec grapes come from the Colchagua Valley in Chile, which is renowned for making excellent red wines. In Colchagua, the moderating breezes from the ocean slow ripening, allowing the wines to achieve perfect ripeness. Cool nights help retain acidity, giving freshness to the wines.

The winter preceding the 2018 harvest was much more favourable than in previous years and was the wettest in a decade, with 500mm recorded in the Colchagua Valley. This allowed enough accumulation of water in the soils and reservoirs. During spring there were a few minor episodes of frost through mid-November, which meant a short delay in budbreak and flowering. Summer had moderate temperatures, with January averaging 28º C. February saw a notable dip in nighttime temperatures, again delaying ripening. There was no rain during harvest, so the fruit arrived for processing at the winery in very good condition.

The hand harvested grapes were cold soaked at 10°C for five days to extract aroma and colour. Fermentation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 12 days, with post-fermentation skin contact to give structure and colour. After malolactic fermentation, 45% of the final blend was aged in French oak barrels for eight months to add complexity and roundness to the wine.

Montes was established in 1988 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand, with the aim of producing the best wines in Chile from the best regions. Montes wines are consistently good because they are meticulous throughout the entire production process. Montes own 800 hectares of vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe located in Colchagua Valley as well a single vineyard Zapallar, in the coastal Aconcagua Valley. In this way, they are able to retain full control of everything that is planted, cultivated and picked. The ‘Classic Series’ wines are all sourced from different regions, chosen to produce the best examples of each variety.
